How do I give my WordPress/Joomla/etc developer access to my site without giving them cPanel details?
There are three possible methods of doing this that I can think of at the moment:
- Change the cPanel password to something new/temporary and give it to them for 12 hours then change back. This is the simplest for you.
- Use cPanel Installatron to install the package you want (eg WordPress or Joomla, etc), which will set up a database with required permissions and passwords automatically. This does a complete install for them in under a minute. They could do this with the cpanel username and password.
- Create the database, and database user for them, as well as an FTP username and password and send the details to them.
Regardless, if you have outside developers working on the site, you should make and keep a backup permanently both from before they start work and from when they finish. Not doing this is asking for trouble. Download these backups to your PC and delete them from cPanel so they cannot be lost.
We strongly recommend you always create FTP users and passwords when saving FTP details (even as yourself) as it allows FTP access to be traced back if a password is stolen by a modern day virus - this happens often enough these days! Contact us if you're not confident about doing this for yourself (it's not that hard, but if it's all new we understand!). We would, for instance, install the latest wordpress including database, and setup of an admin user and ftp user for the developer, and a short email to send to the developer with details, but of course you can also do it all yourself if you are confident. We can also send you a physical CD backup of the site for extra security.
